The Case of Animal Experimentation
Chapter four: Animals in Research: Understanding the context
Summary
In the chapter “Animals in Research: Understanding the context” (The Case of Animal Experimentation, 1986), the author, Fox Michael Allen stated that most of the experiments performed on animals are for the benefit of humankind. In this chapter the author discussed the fact that some people critique experiments performed on animals just because these people ignore the aim of this experiments. The author also pointed out that the human sense for what is better for our own survival, and the knowledge of sensibility regarding the respect for nature that humans posse, “should incline us away from cruelty an exploitation” (Fox Michael Allen, 2007,pg ).The author also declared that even though biomedical and behavioural area, which are “two of the major area of animal use today” (Fox Michael Allen, 2007,pg), are the most susceptible areas for criticism, these areas are morally acceptable. The author also insisted that most of the controversy about animal experimentation is due to the ignorance about the nature of the research and its ends. The author also indicated that people against animal research forget that all the research that use animal is in order to “alleviate a considerable amount of human misery and the gain knowledge that will promote human health” (Fox Michael Allen, 2007,pg).The author concluded that before form a judgement about the morality of these kind of research, it is vital to “ move beyond superficial summaries and first impressions” (Fox Michael Allen, 2007,pg)

Critique
The main idea of the author is that human have the right to use animals for any human purpose. In this chapter the main purpose of the author was to prove that the objective of animal research is to improve the human health. I disagree with the author because there are some experiments that have not benefit for human health. Even though the author showed some experiments where animal research have a reasonable purpose, it ink that there is a lot of experiments that are performed without a human health benefit. When the author showed the examples, he just showed experiments whit a good human end, but the author omitted showing examples where selfishness of humans is present, for example when humans use animal for test new cosmetics. The author clearly tried to distract the attention of the issue by showing just one part of the issue; the part where animal experiments are useful for human kind.
